The House of Loewe: Spanish Leather Craftsmanship Since 1846

Loewe's story began in 1846 in Madrid, when a small collective of Spanish leather artisans formed a workshop dedicated to fine craftsmanship.

In 1872, German craftsman Enrique Loewe Roessberg joined the workshop and, within a decade, gave the house his name. By the turn of the 20th century, Loewe had earned a Royal Warrant from the Spanish royal family, cementing its reputation as one of Europe's most accomplished leather ateliers -- a heritage that predates many of the luxury houses it is grouped with today.

From Family House to LVMH Maison

Loewe remained a family-run business for well over a century before joining the LVMH group in 1996.

Under LVMH, the house preserved its artisanal roots while growing into a global name, anchored by its instantly recognisable interlocking anagram logo, introduced in the 1970s and still used across its leather goods today.

The Puzzle and the Hammock: Two Icons, Two Philosophies

Loewe's modern reputation rests heavily on two silhouettes that could not be more different in spirit.

The Puzzle bag, launched in 2014, is built from geometric leather panels stitched together like its namesake, folding into a distinctive angular structure that made it an instant collector's piece. The Hammock bag takes the opposite approach: a soft, asymmetric drawstring silhouette that slouches naturally with wear, prized for its relaxed, sculptural shape. Together they capture Loewe's balance of architectural precision and easy wearability.

A House Built on Craft

Craftsmanship remains central to Loewe's identity.

Since 2016, the house has run the Loewe Foundation Craft Prize, an annual award celebrating exceptional craftsmanship from artisans around the world -- a reflection of the leather-working values the brand was founded on nearly 180 years ago.
